Martha Stewart Leitch
General Information
Occupation: Architect
Notes: "From the outset, it was Marty's view that the practice of architecture was a difficult life for a woman. The construction business was very competitive, commissions hard to find, and banks unlikely to help over the thin times. In addition, a woman's practice would be restricted by the desire for a family and a civilized life. Once there was a family, the responsibilities and the energies would be divided. However Marty had a strong desire to stay in the world of the profession 'come hell or high water'."
Sources: Taken from a biographical sketch found in the Blanche Lemco van Ginkel's collection in the IAWA.

Country: United States
Notes: Later the firm was called Sites Pacific. She employed 3 to 6 people. The work was typically a mix of small projects. I did hundreds of residential jobs for middle-class clients, occasionally new homes. I did many technically challenging jobs on steep sites, and developed a reputation for technical understanding ? for grading, drainage, irrigation, wood, concrete and stone work. I especially enjoyed my wood designs; trellises and decks. I did gardens for houses designed by historical Craftsman-era architects who were locally renowned; John Hudson Thomas, Charles Maybeck, Julia Morgan, and later architect Henry May, and design-builder; Eichler.
