Title: Torys LLP Office

Description: Torys LLP is one of Toronto’s leading law firms. The firm has occupied nine floors in the south tower of the Toronto Dominion Centre since the 1980’s. In 2005, Torys recognized its traditional interiors were no longer aligned with the leadership and innovative spirit that is today the hallmark of the practice. The proposed renovations were conceived to bring the existing premises up to current standards of practice from both a functional and aesthetic perspective. The principal objective was to consolidate client and executive spaces. An underlying goal was to foreground Tory’s contemporary Canadian art collection, which is distinguished by photo-based and conceptual works by internationally-lauded artists such as Edward Burtynsky, Rodney Graham, and Yves Gaucher, among others.

Title: St. Andrew's College

Description: The St. Andrew's College Master Plan was developed in response to an extensive College Task Force report, which identified a number of deficiencies in the existing facilities and the need for significant improvements to meet the curriculum demands of the 21st century. Derived from the original campus ethos, the Plan creates such new outdoor spaces as academic courtyards and landscape spaces that are linked to a network of paths. These spaces clarify the position of recent campus additions and allow for the expansion of the academic precinct to the west.

Title: McGill University and Genome Quebec Innovation Centre

Description: Historically, Canadian solutions in biotechnology have been exported and patented by American companies who have had the funding to take ideas into production. The Genomics and Proteomics Research Centre was conceived to encourage ideas to be developed and produced within Canada. The decision to locate the Centre on the McGill University downtown campus in Montreal strategically consolidates local expertise - as Montreal is one of Canada’s primary biotech industry centres - and generates synergies between the university, the research centre, private enterprise and public partners. Inspired by the collaborative nature of the Human Genome Project where researchers from around the world share their findings over the Internet daily, the architectural resolution was conceived as an incubator for the cross-fertilization of ideas. The design promotes interactions amongst the researchers through both small and large meetings rooms, generously sized laboratories, a central café, open circulation systems and a light-filled atrium with lounges.

Title: Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery

Description: Over the last few decades, the winery district of the Niagara Peninsula in Southern Ontario has significantly improved the quality of its wine and has grown into an important tourist destination. The Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery created an opportunity to merge contemporary wine-making technologies with an authentic architectural response to the region, and marked a significant departure from the convention of local wineries to mimic more traditional European chateau and bodega typologies.

Title: Grand Valley Institution for Women

Description: The program for the Grand Valley Institution for Women called for a new direction in correctional services which emphasized the reintegration of federally-sentenced women into society. The challenge, architecturally, was to translate the recommendations of the Task Force on Federally Sentenced Women into built form and to replace the institutional atmosphere of women's prisons with a more community-based, interactive environment. Located on a rural site, the design offers a balance of communal and private spaces within a humanely-scaled complex. The concept derives from the village model with buildings organized around a shared central green. To emphasize the residential scale of the complex, the individual program elements – administration, visiting areas, case work, gymnasium, classrooms, etc. – are located within a series of interconnected building elements that share a common circulation loggia fronting the green.

Title: Joseph S. Stauffer Library and Computing Centre

Description: The winning entry in a national design competition, the Joseph S. Stauffer Library and Computing Centre implements the vision of Queen’s University to establish a library system for the 21st century. The project houses a collection of approximately one and a half million volumes within a fully networked environment containing digital information resources including Internet access. The project offers a contemporary interpretation of collegiate architecture to respond to the historic campus context. The architecture is inspired by the vertical proportion and rich silhouette of academic architecture at Queen’s as well as European and North American precedents. Traditional forms and materials are translated in a modern idiom conditioned by contemporary building methods, materials and systems.

Title: Kitchener City Hall

Description: The new Kitchener City Hall is the winning submission in a national design competition held in 1989. Located on a full city block fronting onto King Street, the city’s main street, the City Hall and Civic Square are strategic elements in the City’s downtown revitalization strategy. The design is conceived as an ensemble of spaces and volumes to express the importance of location, topography, program and context in clear architectural terms and to create a public terrain for assembly and movement through the site.
