Notes: Her professional training was as an architect in London, where she spent three years of a successful student and working life. An urge for being creative in the visual arts and a need for a personal challenge drove her to become a student of jewelry-making and design. Mateo has courses on silversmithing, jewelry and applied crafts. Through her pieces, she expresses power, elegance and energy, aesthetic qualities that are important to her linear 3-D shapes, also inspired by Finnish design. Acting on impulse and expressing energy are crucial elements of her design practice, especially when drawing. She then transfers these elements to metal, applying each technique personally by hand and making each piece a one-of-a-kind item. Since 1998 she works as an independent jewelry designer and as an architect selling principally to private clients’ commissions.
