Description: Van Lengen's creative research focuses on the exploration of sound and communication as an integral part of the architectural design process. As a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Technologies in the Humanities, she developed SOUNDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE and LISTENING TO THE LAWN, web sites that analyze and interpret site specific sounds. Her sound drawings and animations, (with artist Jim Welty), are part of the permanent collections of major museums. Van Lengen has authored several books, including Cityscapes, Urgent Matters, and Vassar College: A Campus Guide, (co-author, Lisa Reilly) as well as numerous articles. Van Lengen began her professional career as an Associate of I.M. Pei & Partners before founding her own firm in New York City, that won numerous design awards, and competitions. She holds a B.A. from Vassar College in Psychology, and an MArch from Columbia University.
